Captured by Plein Air Painting
Door County Plein Air Festival in 2011 was my introduction to the world of painting in the out of doors. I was taken by the joy and moved by the life in the final paintings hung in the circular barn of the Peninsula School. The artists invited us to see the coastal towns and the rolling farmland in between the villages. There were long shots and close ups. Sunrise and sunset, gloomy weather and full sun. So much variety in one show. The audience was drawn in to this world of painting along with me.
I have returned several times to this event for continued inspiration. I have entered plein air events in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Florida. I have taken workshops with Joe McGurl, Joe Paquet, Katie Dobson Cundiff, Andy Evansen and others who have added to my enjoyment and preparation. Now I am more concerned with value, composition and light than I was a few years ago. I know the process is always open ended and filled with surprise. My intention is to have the audience participate and see the simple joy of plein air.
